BBIC Live: Style Club - Tuesday, May 25, 2021

Q:What are different ways to wear a scarf?

It really depends on what scarf you’re wearing; you have different types of scarves, some like the Sorbet Scarf are narrower, the Sia Yellow Paint Splash Merino Scarf is longer, and then you have knit scarves like the Silver Lurex Cross Scarf.

Our stylist Dan usually keeps it simple and wears her scarf open; that way it’s adding length and making her look taller through the torso. You could also wear it shorter to one side and longer on the other and wrap it around your neck, loosening it up a bit around the neck to show off the two tones. If it’s really cold, wrap it around tightly and add a beanie. Then add a flat shoe, a trainer or a black book - with the Cynthia Rose Marle Longline Cardigan, it’s a great casual look.

*Update: The Sorbet Scarf is now sold out - we have included an alternative, the Petrova Pink Floral Merino Scarf. The Pandora Black Pom Pom Beanie is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative. The Sia Yellow Paint Splash Merino Scarf is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative, the Ariana Colour Block Merino Scarf. The Silver Lurex Cross Scarf is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative, the Julianne Mocha Ribbed Knit Scarf. The Derby Black Spot Leather Lace Shoe is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative, the Derby Black Punch Leather Lace Up Shoe. Q:What are some flattering cardigan options?

A longline cardigan is great as it gives you length whereas if you’re wearing a shorter chunky knit it can cut you off; it really depends on your body type. As a general rule, avoid anything that hits or stops at the widest part of your body - that applies to cardigans too, as it will accentuate that area.

But do embrace your curves no matter your size or your age, if you’re feeling great and confident it will show. Our stylist Dan is a curvy size 8 and loves longline cardigans as they are flattering for her body shape and make her look taller.

Dan showcased the Colorado Beige Cape - she loves it because it feels dressier than a simple cardigan. You could wear it with a black pair of trousers and a dressy top, the perfect evening outfit. You could even layer with a scarf for more warmth.

*Update: the Brown Leopard Print Scarf showcased in the Live is now sold out - we have included an alternative, the Julianne Black Ribbed Knit Scarf.

Q: How would you pair a maxi length cardigan with a maxi dress?

You could pair the Penny Mustard Merino Longline Cardigan with the Tula Orange Leopard Scarf and the Black Bamboo Batwing Maxi Dress - you could even wear a closed-in shoe with it such as the Derby Black Spot Leather Lace Shoe or an ankle boot such as the Rumer Black Leather Chelsea Boot, or wear tights and boots underneath to add some warmth.

It’s the perfect option if you’re looking for something that’s more fluid, that has movement and that’s not as structured.

If you’re not into longline cardigans, the Teal Abstract Valetta Reversible Jacket is a great alternative - it’s basically two jackets in one. It has a vintage feel to it, which we love! You can roll up the sleeves as the prints work well together.

*Update: the Tula Orange Leopard Scarf showcased in the Live is now sold out - we have included an alternative, the Samantha Mauve Stripe Scarf. The Rumer Black Leather Chelsea Boot is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative, the Season Black Suede Boot. The Derby Black Spot Leather Lace Shoe showcased in the Live is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative, the Derby Black Punch Leather Lace Up Shoe. The Teal Abstract Valetta Reversible Jacket is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative, the Gail Black Abstract Button Down Jacket.

Q: What length should cardigans be with a dress?

There are no rules, it really depends on the dress. You can have a shorter cardigan which finishes at your hip bone or a longline cardigan that covers your hips. The best thing to do is to try your dress on - if you have a bamboo dress that has a lot of fabric, for example, you could still wear a longline cardigan but choose one that’s not too chunky so that it works with your dress.

Q: 5’2 - Should you go for cropped or full length leggings?

Our stylist Dan is 5’2 and always wears full/regular length leggings or pants. The extra fabric sometimes gathers a bit at the ankles but she either cuffs them or simply leaves it as is.

Q: What maxi skirts are good for winter?

We all love a long tube skirt! The Red Bamboo Maxi Frill Skirt looks amazing with our mustard cardigan and a leopard print scarf. The Navy Bamboo Maxi Tube Skirt is a staple in any wardrobe. For something a bit different, we have the Buderim Blue Denim Maxi Skirt; it has pockets and an elastic at the back - it looks flat through the front but it gives you some movement through the back. This one looks great with the Jones White Bamboo Long Sleeve Tee.

*Update: the Buderim Blue Denim Maxi Skirt is now sold out - we have included an alternative, the Sunray Blue Leopard Pleated Skirt which would look amazing paired with the Jones Black Bamboo Long Sleeve Tee.

Q: Do you have nice long dresses that will go with leggings?

Any dress that you have at home can be layered with long sleeve tops and leggings underneath. We usually style the Navy Peak Sleeved Maxi Dress with a pair of black bamboo leggings - but pretty much everything can be layered underneath a dress.

Q: Do you have any styling tips to hide a belly?

If you’re apple shape and have a bit of belly, here are some things to keep in mind.

A mid or high rise bottom is what you should be looking for, particularly if you are wearing tops that finish on your hip bones or are shorter through the waist, as that is where your tummy will be accentuated. A higher rise will conceal that part of your body and hold you in.

Second thing is, where your tops end. Contrary to what you may think, long tops actually accentuate your tummy. To work out where your top should end, press on your hip bones or an inch below; this gives you a great indication of where it should hit to balance out your torso and your legs and flatter your tummy.

Longline cardigans worn over darker base layers are a great option for your body shape as they elongate your torso and everything is camouflaged.

Q: Do you have any jeans for ladies with bigger thighs?

We love our Reed - it comes up to a mid-rise and it has an elastic waistband which is a great feature as some women that are hourglasses or pears and have a more curvaceous thigh sometimes tend to have a narrower waist.

Important to keep in mind: if you have a curvy thigh area, you don't want too much balancing out at the bottom half of your body. Back in the day they used to recommend bootleg pants or jeans, which actually accentuated our thighs; straight leg pants like the Reed will camouflage that part of your body. Pants that are a bit thicker are always a good idea because they hold you in.
