Denim Talk With Dan
Here are the items that she showcased in this week's live!
- Tasha Denim Leopard Jogger Pant : drawstring waistband, pleating detailing on the hips which gives a beautiful relaxed look, pocket. It’s a denim but with a faded leopard print. Dan cuffs the bottom of hers as she likes that the cuff is a bit darker than the jean, which gives it a different look. This feels similar to your favourite loungewear but looks a bit dressier. You can mix this up and wear it with the Petra White Bamboo Top which changes the look completely. You could wear it with an ankle boot or do a lace-up shoe to give it a totally different look. Whatever works with this denim will work with any other denim!
- Jojo Denim Cropped Stretch Jean: this one has a similar shape with a drawstring waist but more of a denim look, distressing through the front and great pocket placement at the back. This will sit quite high in the back and will have more of a boyfriend shape.
- Arden Pink Cotton Tie Pant: beautiful detailing at the knees which will move with you as you walk, drawstring waistband, great pocket placement. You could wear this with a black top but it pops even more with white! Pop on your rose-gold metallic shoes for a pink-toned look or wear them with a silver trainer or tan shoe.
- Jennifer Black Wet Look Jean: we love our leather-look pants! These look extremely flattering on. It’s a mid-rise, great detailing on the back to create great shape and fun detailing through the front. And don’t be nervous, the inside of the pant is very soft so it will feel smooth when you put it on. This is a great pant to dress up or down, simply pair it with a white shirt like the April White Linen Pocket Shirt - how smart does that look!
- Zadie Distressed Blue Stretch Jean: This is more of a pull-on style with a bit of distressing. Dan loves distressing in jeans because it allows you to make it a little bit more casual - paired with a white shirt, it's a fresh and gorgeous look.. Just add a metallic shoe and a black or navy blazer to finish off the look perfectly.
-Lenny Black Denim Stretch Jean: these have a higher waist with an elastic waistband. If you’re looking for a black jean to do what a black pant can do, this is a great option for you! It’s sort of like a denim Ponte pant shape; when you pull it on it just fits like a glove on the body and, along the tummy and the thighs, gives you great support and makes you feel amazing. You can do so much with this jean!
-Bodhi Blue Denim Slim Leg Jean: beautiful standard mid-rise denim, little bit of distressing through the front but it’s still a darker denim which looks dressier.
- Kellie Navy Cotton Straight Leg Pant: this is a corduroy pant which is so fun! In a dark denim which is very dressy. We have a fabulous velvet jacket which would look amazing with this pant. Now remember that when it comes to corduroy, you have to wear them tight as they soften and stretch quite a bit as you wear them.
- Blue Floral Reversible Cotton Blend Jean: this is a reversible pair of jeans! How amazing, you’re getting two for one! It has a fabulous texture and a floral print on one side and a basic blue jean on the other. Again, this would look good with our white linen shirt.
-Reed White Stretch Cotton Pant: these are fabulous. They have an elastic waistband, the fabric is amazing, we have great pocket placement through the back. Envision yourself on an island somewhere and pair it with a white linen shirt and a metallic shoe…
Q: Best tops to wear with straight leg and skinny jeans?
Straight leg jeans - anything looks good. But you need to remember that whether you’re wearing a wide leg, a straight leg, a skinny or a bootleg jean, you will want to balance out your torso with the bottom half of your body.
Now, it’s really important to know that if you choose to wear a loose-fitting top with a loose-fitting pant, you’ll look a lot shorter than you actually are as you won’t be creating any shape and the top will be hitting you at the widest part of your body. As soon as you give your shirt a little half-tuck or a full tuck in the front, your body looks like it’s more in proportion as the eyes immediately go to the narrowest part of your body. If you’re wearing a straight leg or a bootleg jean, you will want to wear a top that is a little bit more fitted or, if it’s on the looser side, tuck it in. If you're wearing a skinny jean you can afford to wear a top that’s a little bit looser as your bottom is not being overpowered by your loose-fitting top.
Q: Any suggestions on what shoes to wear with the Dahlia Black Midi Skirt?
Derby Rose Gold Leather Lace Up Shoe: this is a great lace-up dressy shoe that works with this skirt and with everything else in your wardrobe.
Rigby Black Mule: this is a slide in a fabulous material through the front which gives it great texture and it will dress up the skirt.
Austin Silver Zip Sneaker: perfect for a more casual look.
Coci Tan Leather Flat Shoe: if you’re looking for a dressier shoe. It also depends on your height! You want to make sure that you’re balancing out your body. The great thing about this skirt is that it’s higher at the front and lower in the back, which shows more leg and makes you look taller. If you're going to wear a boot, don’t wear anything too chunky as you want to make sure that it elongates your leg; the Salt Blush Embossed Boot would be perfect. You could do a tight underneath, even do a fun leopard print with a black boot.
*Update: the Dahlia Skirt is now sold out - a similar alternative would be the Lana Black Bamboo Cotton Maxi Skirt. While it does not have the same hi-lo design, it can be worn with the same pieces showcased in the Live.
Q: Does the Salt Blush Embossed Boot go with jeans or dresses?
Everyone knows that this boot is a Dan favourite; she loves the blush colour, which is neutral and close to her skin tone. This is a pair of shoes that you can wear with black tights and a black dress. Look at this shoe as the hero piece of what you’re wearing, it ends up being a focal point of your outfit which is great as the colour is fabulous.
In spring you could wear it without stockings, it would look amazing! You could wear it with navy or with jeans, it works well together as it’s an extremely soft shade. You can make it work with a dark navy corduroy pant, with black; we can see that it pops and ends up being the focal point of what we’re wearing. Even with light denim; pop on a white shirt for a soft and gorgeous look. And let’s not forget our white pants - this is a super versatile boot!
When you’re buying new pieces and you get home and you’re all excited, take all the hero pieces in your wardrobe, lay them all out and create outfits with your new purchases. You can visually see it all together, which makes it easier to style but also to identify the gaps in your wardrobe.
Q: I'm needing to revamp my work wardrobe. I live in a warm and humid place and work with little kids and their families so it must be cool, smart, casual and comfy. Any items you love that you think might work?
You want to be smart and put together and professional in a way, but still relatable and comfortable as well. So, a few things:
The Lydia Black Cotton Tier Dress: it’s very light, it has a ¾ sleeve so it won’t be too hot and a hi-lo style. If you want to wear a tight you can but you could also just wear it with a silver trainer. It’s a beautiful light fabric which is perfect.
Mimi Black Cotton Broderie Anglaise Dress: this is great because it is quite textured, the fabric is amazing! We have a short sleeve, v-neck and a lovely seam under the bust. If you wanted to dress it up, you could try the Liv Tan Leather Pointed Flat Shoe, which would work with both dresses. If you have a meeting and want to dress it up even more, the Rigby Black Mule would be a great option or even the Derby Rose Gold Leather Lace Up Shoe.
*Update: the Mimi Black Cotton Broderie Anglaise Dress showcased in the Live is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative, the Asta Black Cotton Tier Dress.
The Joy Black Elastic Waist Dress is gorgeous as well; you can remove the belt that comes with it and switch it up with a stretchy neutral belt. It’s quite long but very cool. You can wear it with trainers or neutral slip-ons; you can truly do so much with this dress!
*Update: the Joy Black Elastic Waist Dress showcased in the Live is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative, the Amaya Black Belted Button Dress.
