FABRIC GUIDE:
All About Cotton Clothing

Is there anything better than slipping on your old cotton t-shirt and your favourite pair of jeans? We think not.

Nothing screams comfort and versatility quite like our cotton essentials which is why we always make sure to have a good variety of tops, dresses and pants in stock.

What are the benefits of cotton?

Hypoallergenic

Cotton is soft on the skin and is not irritating compared to most fabrics, which makes it a great option for sensitive skin - this is particularly true of organic cotton.

Breathable

Cotton being a natural fabric, garments made out of a higher percentage of the fabric are more breathable than synthetic fabrics and will keep you dry. That’s why health professionals tend to recommend cotton or bamboo underwear - admittedly not as sexy as lace undergarments but wayyyy more comfortable.

Doesn’t retain odour

Some synthetic fabrics tend to hold on to smells even after washing, that’s not the case with cotton, which tends to wash well.

Natural

Cotton is a natural fabric, as it comes from a plant, as opposed to man-made materials such as polyester. This means that it can be grown organically, without any chemicals involved, which makes it better for the planet.

What is cotton fabric?

Cotton is a widely popular natural fabric generated from the plant of the same name. The fluffy fibre surrounding the seeds, called cotton bolls, is separated into long strands which are then spun to create the yarn used to manufacture cotton garments.

Do cotton clothes shrink?

Cotton does tend to shrink - especially when washed in hot water or put in the dryer. To avoid that happening, wash in cold water with like colours and air dry your cotton pieces.

Is cotton soft?

Yes, high-quality cotton is naturally soft due to the nature of the fibre used in its production but, ultimately, how soft it feels will depend on how the fabric was woven and how you care for it. As cotton absorbs moisture, it can also tend to soak up extra detergent or fabric softener so, like everything in life, don’t overdo it!

Does cotton wrinkle?

One of the main downsides of cotton is that it does wrinkle more easily than most fabrics… but nothing that can’t be fixed with a quick iron! And it is a pretty fuss-free fabric; no need to worry about choosing the perfect setting or reaching an ideal low temperature, cotton can take the heat.

Hot tip: try crinkle cotton if you hate ironing as much as we do!

Cotton Clothing Care Guide

While you should always refer to your garment’s individual care label, here are some helpful guidelines to keep in your back pocket.

How to wash cotton clothes?
To keep your cotton clothes intact, machine wash on a gentle or normal cycle in cold water with like colours. You should ideally air dry them to avoid any shrinkage but, if you’re really short on time, put them in the dryer on a low heat setting.

Always refer to care labels as different cotton blends may require special attention.

Can you iron cotton clothes?
Of course! Plug in your iron on medium-high heat, dampen your cotton garment using the steam function or a spray bottle filled with water and iron away.

How to remove stains from cotton?
As a general rule, you can use your favourite stain remover and let it set for a few minutes before gently scrubbing at the stain with a cloth and washing the garment as per the care label.

How to store cotton clothes?
Storing cotton clothes is pretty fuss-free; clothes can be folded or hung in a cool, dark place.

How to make your cotton t-shirt soft again?
Do you have a favourite cotton t-shirt that has become a bit rough after one too many washes? Just add half a cup of white vinegar to your next wash, it will act as a natural fabric softener - just like the effect that a nice glass of wine has on us after a long stressful day.
