Rayon, also known as viscose, is a semi-synthetic fibre made from wood pulp. It’s not considered a natural fibre as such as the transformation that it undergoes to make it into a fabric does require chemicals.
Rayon feels soft and smooth on the skin; it’s such a versatile fabric that can be made to mimic silk or cotton. It also has a bit of a natural sheen which is more noticeable in darker fabrics such as black and navy.
There are many types of rayon, including modal and micro modal, which is one of our favourite fabrics here at BB as it’s soft yet durable.
It sure is, which is why we stock so many styles in that fabric! Rayon is great for humid weather as it absorbs moisture, which keeps you dry, and is flowy and breathable - we truly need all the breeze that we can get with our hot Australian summers.

How do you maintain rayon?
Rayon clothes usually need to either be dry cleaned or hand-washed in cold water; some may be fine to put in the washing machine on a delicate cycle, but confirm by reading the care label.
Can you put rayon in the dryer?
No, you should avoid putting rayon in the dryer and instead simply lay your garments out to air dry.
Hot tip: roll your rayon dress in a towel and gently press to remove excess water before laying out to dry - perfect if you can’t wait to wear it again!
Will rayon shrink?
As a general rule, rayon tends to hold its shape pretty well but it will shrink if washed in warm water or put in the dryer so make sure that you follow the instructions above to keep your dresses looking as good as new.
How do you get wrinkles out of rayon clothes?
Rayon does tend to wrinkle so get that ironing board out of the closet and, while your clothes are still slightly damp, turn them inside out and iron the garment on a low heat setting over a clean tea towel so as not to leave any heat marks. If you have a steamer, even better!
