Q : I'm after a dress for a winter wedding - any suggestions in black?
The Clio Black Silk Layer Dress would be a great option - it is made of a beautiful translucent material with a stretch lining. Why this one? You can wear as-is in summer or layer it in winter - it has sleeves so you could wear a black long sleeve shirt underneath it while still keeping that beautiful movement and fluidity in the arms. You could wear it with boots and sheer stockings; a knee-high boot heel or a tan boot would both work well. Dressy boots are acceptable at winter weddings!
You could even wear the Nora Pink Structured Coat over it or a red or rust coloured long line cardigan like the Quatro Red Bamboo Cashmere Longline Cardigan. You could add printed tights with a beautiful pattern or black textured stockings with black boots. As for accessories, a necklace with a bit of silver or statement earrings would work perfectly with this dress.
*Update: the Nora Pink Structured Coat is now sold out - we have included an alternative, the Angelina Black Asymmetric Collar Jacket. The Quatro Red Bamboo Cashmere Longline Cardigan is now sold out, we have included it in Black.
Q: I would like jeans that have a straight leg and are a little dressy - what would you suggest?
When we think of a dressy jean, we always think dark denim - that’s what makes it dressy in our stylist’s opinion. You only want a little bit of wash as lighter denim tends to be considered more casual, so we want to go darker. The Belinda Dark Denim Straight Leg Jean that we have in stock at the moment is slightly distressed but still dressy, you could wear it with a black top, jacket and a heel. Pocket placement is amazing; they sit right on the bottom which will give you a really good curve. It has a mid to high-rise; when our 5’2 stylist puts them on, they sit just below the belly button.
You can tell if a jean is dressy or not by its colour - dark denim is very classic. No rips, no tears, not too much distressing, if any. And if you don’t want to wear jeans, wear a straight capri like the Cody White Straight Leg Stretch Pant or the Hilda Tan Check Ponte Pant.
Q : Styling tips for 5’2, 12 top, 14 bottom and a very short waist. Not a fan of the side tuck!
Let’s say you’re wearing the Mali White Drape Top with your favourite pants.
When you do a tuck you should always consider where your jeans are going to end and if you’re going to be blousing your shirt or not. Being 5’2 you will want to make sure that your proportions balance out.
You can do a front tuck in the pants and blouse your top over - this helps balance out your torso and legs so that they look in proportion. Grab a corner of the shirt and tuck it into your belt loop and do a soft tuck - it’s not cutting you off, not too high, gives balance and elongates the leg. You can also tie a soft knot using the fabric or a rubber band - it makes it look drapey and fluid.
Another great option is a batwing top that can be worn as a tunic or with jeans/pants. The fact that it’s a hi-lo top - lower at the back, higher at the front means that it stops mid-thigh and gives your body shape and proportion. You can tuck it in the front belt loop and wear with pleather jeans, normal jeans or just tights and a knee-high boot. With this shirt, a good tip is to keep your accessories neutral so that orange remains the hero.
Fast forward to 19:30 to see Dan demonstrate the tucks mentioned above.
Q : What items would be good for a capsule wardrobe for a weekend away in Autumn?
Wear a neutral bottom, a black tank, and add a comfortable travelling top over it. The next day, if you’re going to lunch, pop a pair of jeans on with the same top. If you’re going out to lunch somewhere dressier, wear it with a ruched skirt with black tights and a boot. If you pack a Mali White Drape Top you can wear it with black pants or jeans. If you’re going somewhere a bit colder, you can layer with bamboo basics tops or a stripe underneath. If you’re going out for a dressy dinner, just add the pink jacket. If you want a casual jacket, just put on a longline cardigan over your basic top and switch to jeans. Everything goes with everything, it all matches together - that’s what a capsule wardrobe is.
The best thing to do when packing is to put it all out on the bed and play around with bottoms and tops to create different outfits. Always pack a casual shoe, like a trainer, and a boot to elevate your outfits. If you have a basic top, just add a denim jacket - as time goes on, you can keep growing your mix and match wardrobe with pieces that you can layer.
*Update: the Nora Pink Structured Coat is now sold out - we have included an alternative statement jacket, the Adeline Tan Leopard Coat. The Quatro Red Bamboo Cashmere Longline Cardigan is now sold out - we have included a fun alternative, the Mia Pink Leopard Long Cardigan.
Q : Comfy pants for winter that are not jeans.
You could wear a stretch pant, such as the Black Bamboo Legging, which is very comfortable and that you could wear with your Mali White Drape Top and longline jumper or jacket.
Any straight-through Ponte pant would be a great option; you could try the Nadine Black Textured Stretch Pant or the Hilda Tan Check Ponte Pant.
The Reed pant has an elastic waist and is available in a lot of different colours - our stylist, Dan, is obsessed with the light grey!
Q: What’s the rule with tucking pants into boots vs tucking pants out of boots?
Our stylist, Dan, wears her pants over her boots. Generally if you want your legs to look taller and longer, wear them out. If you have a knee-length pair of boots, we can tuck them in or if you’re wearing Ponte pants or any pants that are tighter on the bottom you can tuck them in. But our stylist tends to think that it looks dressier when they’re out. With tights of course, you tuck in. Have a look at your whole leg line and think “is it cutting me off at the ankle?” “Is it making me look short?” “ Is it balancing out my torso?” Play around and look at your body shape - if it looks better in, do it, why not!
Q: Best longline tops / jumpers to wear over leggings and Ponte pants?
The Quatro Red Bamboo Cashmere Longline Cardigan or the Nora Pink Structured Coat. The Adriana Navy Turtleneck Knit Poncho would be easy to layer with a long sleeve underneath, you could do a great stripe underneath or leave it black. You could try the Mallory Navy Leopard Batwing Top or the Sorronda Black Bamboo Batwing Top. You can layer any of these pieces with a long sleeve top underneath.
*Update: the Adriana Navy Turtleneck Knit Poncho is now sold out - we have included a similar alternative, the Kani Navy Knit Poncho. The Quatro Red Bamboo Cashmere Longline Cardigan is now sold out - we have included an alternative, the Cece Black Check Knit Cardigan.
Q: Best styles to take you from work to going out?
Everything that was showcased in this live could easily be taken from day to night, depending on your workplace and on your shoes and makeup. Add a bright lip or a smokey eye and a neutral lip and boom - elevated look.
You might go from wearing a flat shoe like the Bestie Tan Leather Loafer to boots like the Filo Tan Mid Ankle Boot when you go out at night; it’s generally colder at night so we tend to add layers. You could do a fun statement jacket with it as well. If you have a more casual workplace then you could wear this outfit with a trainer such as the Voss White Leather Slip On Sneaker during the day and then a boot at night.
Changing shoes, jewellery and makeup is the easiest way to elevate your outfit!
